A 19-year-old Hialeah woman is counting her blessings after a quick errand may have saved her life.
Maya Garcia told local reporters that her Samsung Galaxy A15 caught fire and exploded on her bed while she stepped outside to grab a food delivery order, turning her bedroom into a scene of destruction within minutes.
A Narrow Escape
Garcia said she left her phone charging on her bed before heading outside to collect a DoorDash order. Only about a minute after the food arrived, she and her father heard a loud blast coming from inside the house. She described the sound as a mix of an explosion and shattering glass, followed almost immediately by smoke and flames pouring from her room.
Garcia said the scene outside her window quickly became unrecognizable, with thick smoke making it impossible to see into the house. She admitted she was frightened but tried to keep a level head as the situation unfolded. Had she stayed in her room even a few minutes longer, the outcome could have been very different.
Bedroom Left in Ashes
By the time the fire was contained, Garcia’s bedroom was left in ruins. The phone itself was still visible amid the wreckage, a charred reminder of how quickly the incident escalated. Personal belongings and childhood keepsakes were destroyed in the blaze, though Garcia says none of that compares to simply being alive.
Investigators who examined the outlet where the phone had been plugged in reportedly found no signs of an electrical malfunction there, pointing attention toward the device itself as the likely source of the fire.
Investigation Still Underway
Fire investigators have not yet released a final report on the incident, but Garcia and her father say they were informally told by arson investigators that the phone appears to be responsible for sparking the flames. A formal determination is still pending.
Local reporters reached out to Samsung for comment. The company confirmed it was aware of the incident and said it had contacted the family directly to gather more information about what happened.
A Family Grateful to Be Safe
Despite losing much of what filled her bedroom, Garcia says her outlook remains positive. She described feeling overwhelming gratitude simply to have escaped unharmed, noting that material possessions can be replaced but her life could not have been.
The incident adds to a small but growing number of reports involving lithium-ion batteries in smartphones overheating or igniting unexpectedly. While rare, experts have long cautioned that damaged, defective, or overheated batteries can pose fire risks, especially when devices are left charging unattended for long periods.
For now, Garcia and her family are focused on rebuilding what was lost while they wait for a final ruling on what triggered the fire that nearly cost them everything.
