A Louisville mother has taken to a local Facebook group for Jefferson County Public Schools parents to share her frustration after she says her six-year-old son has been physically bullied by a classmate since the school year began.
A Pattern of Escalating Incidents
According to the mother’s post, the trouble started with pushing on the playground earlier this year. She says the situation grew worse over time, eventually including her son being knocked to the ground and punched in the stomach, and most recently being hit while trying to eat lunch.
She says she only learned about several of these incidents because other children told her, not the school itself.
The mother said she contacted her son’s teacher, who told her the matter would be passed along to school administrators.
She says the only consequence for the other child so far has been a verbal warning to stop. She also mentioned that other classmates have started picking on her son as well, and that she has been encouraging him to defend himself in the meantime.
Community Members Weigh In With Advice and Frustration
The post drew dozens of responses from other parents in the group, many of whom shared similar experiences with the district. Several commenters urged her to escalate the issue beyond the classroom teacher, recommending she request a meeting with the school principal, and if that fails, file a formal complaint with the Jefferson County school board.
One commenter suggested involving media outlets if the school does not respond appropriately. Another parent claimed that pursuing legal action would not be effective, arguing that going directly to school leadership and the board would carry more weight.
Several parents said they had grown so discouraged with how JCPS handled bullying complaints that they eventually withdrew their children from the district altogether. Several said they transferred their kids to schools in neighboring Bullitt County and reported being much happier with the outcome.
Other commenters described their own attempts to resolve bullying situations, including one parent who said she requested a joint meeting between her family and the other child’s parents, only to feel the teacher was unhappy about the request. That comment prompted further criticism from other users, who suggested it reflected poorly on the teacher’s handling of the situation.
As of this writing, it is unclear whether school administrators have taken further action regarding the reported incidents. The original poster indicated she plans to continue pushing for a resolution and has identified the names of the children she says have been involved.
